A musical romp based on Nathaniel West’s famous satire on the rise of fascism in America in the Depression, styled as a farcical vaudeville.
West’s savage novel describes the terminal odyssey of Lemuel P. Pitkin, a 17 year old innocent abroad, who leaves home and insecurity in search of riches in an impoverished America which brims with crooks, dreamers and schemers, tarts down and outs brothers, corrupt Irish cops and economic emptiness.
A Cool Million toured to Holland and Belgium and also transferred to Open Space Theatre, Euston Road.
Rob Walker was awarded the Harry Beaumont Award for being the Best Young Director for A Cool Million.
Dave Hill was only ten when he first came across Half Moon Theatre in the 1970s. He quickly got involved with the stage management side of the theatre and A Cool Million was the first show he worked on. Interviewed by Alexia-Pyrrha Ashford.
Theatre designer Iona McLeish worked on many productions at Half Moon Theatre at Alie Street and on the Mile End Road. She talks about designing A Cool Million and how the particular challenges of creating a set which could also go on tour. Interviewed by Toni Tsaera.
