Andrea was in the Half Moon Youth Theatre in the 1980s.
I think The Mint Juleps brought out an album which had the ‘Round Our Way’ song on it. In the opening scenes of Round Our Way, we were all in the scaffolding at the back and there were a couple of actors on stage. Then, all of a sudden, we all burst into song from the back of the theatre and climbed all over everybody to get onto the stage. It was a bit kind of Banner Theatre-y at the time.
I can’t remember exactly what Round Our Way was about, but it was issues like racism, sexism, that kind of thing. I was the youngest girl in it and I remember I had to play a kind of feminist character. I had a brother and I remember there was one scene where I had a banner and I had been at Greenham Common or something like that. I can’t quite remember exactly what it was all about but I had to show that I was as good as a boy at doing various things.
There was another scene where I had to show that I’d made this Meccano set of a crane. I remember trying to look after this Meccano set which was all rickety and shaking all the time. The truth was that I hadn’t actually made it, a boy had made it, even though in the play it was supposed to be me.
We were scripted by Donald, who is in the pictures here.
There was another show called Boy Meets Girl and that was about a boy coming out as being gay. I seem to remember that for the main character, that was actually what was going on at the time and he was at my school, which was John Scurr Primary School.
