Kazzum Theatre Company commissioned writer Mirza Fehimovic to develop a play with the company which explored and introduced refugee issues for very young children. Mirza himself arrived in London from Sarajevo as a war refugee. In his country he had published two collections of poetry, a collection of short stories, a novel and two plays for children which were broadcast on Radio Sarajevo.
We began with memories from the time before, when Mother was there not here. She told and shared her stories with her children. There was so much love in the room. She brought the past to the present. Her past. Boxes were opened, secrets revealed. An empty space was filled with colour, flowers, characters. But not everything had to be told, not yet.
Ten Suitcases was developed by Kazzum Theatre Company as part of Half Moon’s Exchange for Change programme in 2004.
