This ancient tale has, from time to time, reappeared in different forms throughout the world. It draws upon such stories as the Judgement of Solomon and Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle.

A war leads a mother to abandon her baby in a fruitless attempt to save both her valuable possessions ans her own life. A young girl risks all to save the baby, for whom she struggles against all life’s hardships and dangers. When all is revealed, how should she be judged? Who is the ‘true’ mother?

The Tug of Love was performed in November 1985 and was subsequently performed in Autumn 1986.

You can access the script of this play via the British Library’s MPS Modern Playscripts Collection.
