Terry Higgins died aged 37 on 4 July 1982 in St Thomas’ Hospital, London. He was among the first people in the UK to die from AIDS. Following his death, Terry’s close friend Martyn Butler, Tony Calvert and Terry’s partner Rupert Whitaker, and others started the Terrence Higgins Trust. It was the first charity in the UK to be set up in response to HIV. One of the first plays in the UK to discuss HIV/AIDS was William M. Hoffman’s 1897 play As Is.
