Republic of Ireland formed
June 8, 2016 5:51 pmThe Irish Free State had been formed in 1922 as a result of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. It continued with a status of dominion until a new constitution was adopted following a national referendum, on 29 December 1937. The new Constitution of Ireland came into force and the state effectively became a republic, with an elected non-executive president as head of state. It was officially declared a republic on 18 April 1949, following the Republic of Ireland Act 1948.
