HMS Conqueror sinks the General Belgrano
June 6, 2016 2:04 pmThe first naval loss of the Falklands War was the World War II-vintage Argentine light cruiser ARA General Belgrano. The nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror sank General Belgrano on 2 May 1982. Three hundred and twenty-three members of General Belgrano’s crew died in the incident. The losses from General Belgrano totalled nearly half of the Argentine deaths in the Falklands conflict. The sinking of the Belgrano is depicted in Steven Berkoff’s 1986 play Sink the Belgrano.
