Devised by the company, this young people’s performance toured outdoor spaces and festivals, including Stepney Green. It was inspired by the Indiana Jones story, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and explored issues related to environmental degradation.
Raiders of the Lost Turtle was May/June 1983. Andy Alty, me and Jacquetta May and Claire Hemphill, though Ruth Sheen was in the company too then. I only remember doing it at a fete or gala on Stepney Green, two or three performances over the day. The four of us devised it, creating the story through discussion and creating dialogue through improvisation. I think Andy put the script together. It was a short piece, around 40 minutes, inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark, with Andy playing the Indiana Jones character on stilts and Jacquetta as a beleaguered turtle whose survival was threatened by environmental degradation. I played a rapacious villain, bent on exploiting the earth’s riches for personal gain.
