The play took place in London 1601. ‘Hamlet’ was a hot ticket at the Globe Theatre. Set in the boudoir of Elizabeth I of England. In the midst of political upheaval aging Elizabeth is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her lover, the Earl of Essex, who is involved in an attempted coup d’etat against the queen. In order to prepare for this tryst, she has summoned her beautician, Dame Grosslady, who speaks primarily in grammelot.

Chris Bond was Artistic Director of Half Moon Theatre on the Mile End Road from 1985-88. He talks about Elizabeth, a Dario Fo play, and how he is surprised that it isn’t done more often. Interviewed by Rosie Vincent.
